The Crushing Produces the Oil
When an olive is whole, it is firm, but it cannot feed or heal. It must be crushed to release the oil hidden inside. So it is with the people of God. The crushing seasons of our lives, the betrayals, the loneliness, the unanswered questions, are not cruelty, they are consecration. The Lord uses the breaking to release the anointing. Without the weight of pressing, there is no oil.
Paul reminds us, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8–9). What feels like destruction is often the hand of the Potter shaping us into vessels fit for His Kingdom.
But to the world, crushing feels unbearable, and without Christ it only produces bitterness. This is the consequence of choosing the world over Him. To cling to temporary pleasures, to live for applause, to silence conviction, these choices invite eternal separation. “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15). Choosing the world is choosing to be emptied without oil, to be left behind without the light of the lamp.
Silence from Heaven is not cruelty, it is mercy, giving space for repentance. Amos 8:11 warned of a day of famine, “not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.” If you feel silence, it is the Lord waiting for your surrender. His silence is never abandonment, it is the call to seek Him while He may be found.
Beloved, do not resist the crushing. Do not despise the silence. Let it break you open before God, for in the breaking flows the oil of intimacy, the oil of anointing, the oil that marks you as His. Without it, the lamp will flicker out. But with it, you will shine like the wise virgins, ready for the Bridegroom’s return (Matthew 25:1–13).
The world offers escape. Christ offers endurance. One ends in ashes, the other in oil. Choose wisely, for the time is short.
